The Hyena King

This is a parody version of The Lion King with hyenas in place of the lions and vice versa. Seeing as there are only three hyenas portrayed by name in the films, I have decided to use some semi-canon lions, my own characters, which are not really my own as I use the lions personalities and traits with the hyena names, and other people's characters (with permission of course).

Chapter 1: The Newborn Prince

As the sun rose over the great Pridelands, the song of the land called to them all. Yes, it was time, the newborn prince had been during the night and he was ready to be presented to his subjects. Every animal lifted its head and heard it, the call. The herds all gathered and trekked through the early morning light, with many birds flying above them in great clouds of colour.

From the day we arrive on the planet, and blinking step into the sun. There's more to see, then could ever be seen, more to be done, then could ever be done.

Antelopes leapt through the mist, while the giraffes climbed the hills, their young close behind. Everyone from the zebras, who trotted across the plains in a mighty herd, to the crawling ants high up on the tree tops was rushing to be the first to see the prince.

There's far too much to take in here. More to find then what could ever be found.

Elephants stomped across their worn tracks, trying not to step on the tiny flightless birds that scuttled around their feet, thick padded feet sending up great clouds of dust for the poor birds.

But with the sun rolling high, through the sapphire sky…

The zebra herd had reached the mighyt river and thundered through it, sending up splashes by the elephants, which carried a vast array of birds, the antelopes and wildebeest swimming by their sides.

Each great and small on the endless rise…

The sun fully risen, the herds' destination came into view… Pride Rock, a large stone structure with a large rock jutting out from the others, creating a look out over the lands. The animals approached it with great hurry, as they saw their great and wise king standing on the lip, a faithful blue hornbill flying at him. The large tan-coloured hyena looked down when the bird landed and bowed, wings spread, before smiling and giving a respectful nod. The king was a Spotted Hyena, like his whole clan, with a thick black mane running right down his neck, a few large brown spots across his shoulders, black socks in his legs, a light underbelly and large yellow eyes filled with hope and love for his kingdom, rimmed by brown.

It's the circle of life~! And it moves us all! Through despair and hope~ Through faith and love~

The herds below parted as a dark grey mandrill with white hair hobbled through, leaning on a stick with various berries and seed pods on his wooden staff, the sun shining through behind him. The buffalos flanking where he entered bowed at the sight of him, while the king opened his mouth wide and smiled, before the mandrill clambered up Pride Rock, greeting the king with open arms and then being embraced by the king in a wide hug.

Till we find our place, through the path unwinding, it's the circle… The circle of life!

King Addae moved back from the rock edge and strolled right over to his laying mate and queen, Shenzi, a slightly grey hyena with a similar light tan underbelly, dark grey spots and full, loose bangs hanging over her heavy-lidded eyes, a small scar across her left cheek. Resting in her fore limbs, was a tiny pup, a grey thing with pale spots, half-socks and a mop of a black mane hanging over his eyes. When his father approached, he awoke and turned over, revealing deep gold eyes.

Rafiki, the shaman mandrill, looked curiously down on him before lifting his staff and shaking the berries and seed pods above the young prince's head, his paws trying to bat them. With a loud CRACK! A large seed pod was opened, revealing the orange juice inside. The wise shaman smeared some across the pup's forehead with one hand, while grasping sand from beside him, and sprinkling it across him, sending the new prince sneezing.

The proud parents, Addae and Shenzi, touched their heads together, smiling with pride, as baby Astan was lifting from his mother's hold. Cupping the pup gently, Rafiki walked slowly out to the rock lip, the anxious animals waiting. And then, held out before them in the trusted shaman's firm and secure grip, was their new future king.

The circle of life… It moves us all! Through despair and hope!

Not one animal stood still, the zebras and antelope's reared and called their voices. The monkeys leapt, screeching. The rhinos moaning their deep cries, the hippos following suit. The elephants were the loudest, raising their trunks high and giving out rumbling trumpets.

Through faith and love! Till we find our place, through the path unwinding!

As a beam of light fell from the sky, perhaps by one of the Great Kings of the Past, the giraffes were the first to respect their prince, leaning back and allowing their long necks to fall forward and giving a solemn bow. The zebras, the leopards, the speedy cheetahs, even the mighty elephants fell forward, greeting their new leader with the most respect anyone could ever give.

It's the circle… The circle of life!

Meanwhile, in a cave not far from Pride Rock…

A mouse scuttled out of its hole, nose sniffing for tasty morsels to snack on as it scurried along the red rock. It looked up while cleaning its whiskers, seeing a dark shadow overlook it, squeaked, just as a heavy dark grey paw slammed down on him. Squealing madly, the hyena who owned the paw brought the mouse up by its tail, to dangle it by his dark coloured muzzle.

"Life's not fair, is it," the medium grey shabby-looking hyena said, his pale yellow eyes watching the house with boredom. "You see, I.. I would never become king," he continued, letting the mouse roam over his paws, which were black like his muzzle. "But you…" he caught the mouse as it went to make its escape, "will never see the light of another day." He chuckled and opened wide, hanging the mouse over it ready to swallow whole.

"Didn't your mother ever tell you not to play with your food!" A bossy voice sounded from behind the slightly bald hyena. He turned his head to see the hornbill majordomo, Zazu, standing behind him, wings folding back and a serious glare upon his beak.

The scruffy hyena sighed, "What do you want?"

The bird puffed his chest out proudly before sinking into a bow, "I'm here to announce that king Addae is on his way!" His gaze shifted back into a glare. "So you better have a good excuse for missing the ceremony this morning!"

As the hyena rolled his eyes, the mouse escaped from his paws before racing back to its hole. "Oh now, Zazu, you made me lose my lunch," the annoyed hyena said.

"Ha!" Zazu laughed, moving closer to the hyena. "You'll lose more then that when the king gets through with you. He's as mad aas a hippo with a hernia!"

"Ooooo," the hyena mocked, slowly getting to his feet as he stared down at the hornbill. "I quiver with fear!" He assumed a stalking position and glared with hungry eyes.

"Now Banzai," Zazu gulped, backing away slowly, seeing the hyena get low to the ground. "Don't look at me that way… Help!" he screamed as the hyena roared and leapt after him, before snapping him shut in his wide jaws.

"Banzai!" The King had arrived, standing on an outcrop of rocks right outside the cave. Banzai looked at him over his shoulder, mouth full with bird. "Drop him."

The hornbill's beak poked out of Banzai's mouth. "Impeccable timing, your majesty!" he managed to say, before the hyena spat him out. Zazu stayed on the rocky floor, gazing at his hyena-saliva-soaked with distaste, groaning with disgust.

"Why, isn't it my big brother," Banzai smiled, as he walked towards Addae before stepping very close to him, before turning away. "Defending from on high to mingle with the commoners!"

Addae frowned at his brother. Banzai had been second born and when you were in a royal clan, the first born, no matter the gender, become king or queen. When two males were born it could cause strife, but Addae had allowed his brother to stay, despite other hyena's well-wishes, instead of driving him away. "Shenzi and I didn't see you at the presentation of Astan."

Banzai mock-frowned. "That was today?" he gasped as he leaned back of his hind legs to rest his fore-paws on the rock wall in front of him, "Oh I feel simply awful!" He dragged his claws down the stone, send shrieks down Zazu's spine who was huddled under the king's legs. He flexed his claws, smirking slightly, "Must have slipped my mind."

"Yeah, well, as slippery as your mind is, as the king's brother you should have been first in line!" Zazu pointed out, flying up to Banzai's muzzle before the beast snapped his jaws and sent the bird zooming back to Addae's legs.

"Well I was first in line…" Banzai said, leaning his head down towards the bird cowering behind the large hyena leg before he growled," until the little hairball was born."

"That hairball is my son," Addae said firmly, meeting his brother's head and bringing it back up to eye level. "And your future king!"

Banzai snorted and gave a little paw flip. "Oh, I shall practice my curtsey!" He turned his back on the king and walked away, tail flicking as he went.

"Don't turn your back on me, Banzai!" Addae called after him.

Banzai turned to see his brother and smiled deviously. "Oh no, Addae. Perhaps you shouldn't turn your back on me…"

Addae gave a roaring cackle and leapt towards Banzai, circled him, and blocked his path of exit. "Is that a challenge?!" he demanded.

"Temper, temper," tutted the scruffy hyena. "I wouldn't dream of challenging you."

"Pity!" spat Zazu, finally hopping out from Addae's legs to be in front of Banzai, glaring. "Why not?"

Banzai lowered his head to smirk at the majordomo. "Well, as far as brains go, I got the hyena's share," he informed the bird, who hopped backwards, as the hyena continued in a disappointed voice. "But as for brute strength… I'm afraid I'm at the shallow end of the gene pool." And with those words, he pushed past the king and leapt out of his cave to wander towards a distant water hole.

Addae sighed and plopped down on his haunches, watching his brother's lone and skinny figure. "There's one in every family, sire," Zazu said. "Two in mine." He flew up onto the king's shoulder. "And they always manage to ruin special occasions."

King Addae sighed, dropping his royal seriousness. "What am I going to do with him?"

"He'd make a very handsome throw-rug," Zazu suggested, almost too cheery.

"Zazu!" Bu the king had a slight smile on his face as he turned and the bird flew off his shoulder to soar beside him as he walked.

"And just think, whenever he gets dirty, you can take him out a beat him!"

Both the king and majordomo chuckled with laughter as they walked back to Pride Rock, to see the young prince.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The skies darkened with storm clouds that afternoon, sending all animals scurrying to cover, while the wind stayed still, creating an air of impending doom. The rain poured down from the heavens, the rivers filled up with fresh, clear water. Yes, it was the end of the dry season, a welcomed time for all of the pride lands.
In a hollowed out tree a fair away from pride rock, Rafiki the mandrill drew on the walls of his home with sap from a seed pod, sketching an image of a hyena pup on a blank spot amongst the many that were already there.
He tutted and hummed to himself as he worked, before he gave a small chuckle as he swiped a bright spot across the pup's forehead before he uttered his name.
"Astan."
Hello all! This is a new mini-project I started a fair while back but decided to start it up again. Quite simply, it's a parady version of The Lion King with the hyenas and lions switching places.
Some dialogue may have been changed to suit the new characters as well as some names.
Addae (Ed) = Mufasa
Shenzi = Sarabi
Banzai = Take/ Scar
Astan = Simba
